Drones pose a real threat when used for unlawful activity. Capable of flying long distances, they are controlled by their operator kilometers away. Compact, fast and easy to manoeuvre, small drones are hard to detect, making them a real security threat to oil rigs, refineries, power plants, wind farms and water stations are easily identifiable and exposed, making them a vulnerable target for criminal activity.

Traditional security methods such as perimeter fencing and surveillance cameras are not effective against drone incursions. A perfect example of this was in 2018 when Greenpeace flew drones into a French nuclear facility and dropped smoke bombs onto the roof of a building containing irradiated fuel.
